RUGBY - Training for years 4, 5 and 6 takes place on a Tuesday 3.30pm until 5pm every week. Matches usually take place on Friday afternoons. Mr Dennis and Mr Tunnadine are responsible for rugby in the school.
NETBALL - Years 5 and 6 girls are offered the opportunity to play competitive netball against other local schools. Training takes place after school on Tuesday until 4.45pm. Miss Britten is the teacher in charge of netball.
CRICKET - In the summer term, years 6 are able to play rounders and compete against other local schools. Training takes place with Mr Tunnadine.
BASKETBALL - In the summer term year 6 are able to play basketball. Years 6 compete weekly against other local schools and take part in inter-school championships. Training takes place on Thurday evenings during the Summer Term with Mr Jones.
CROSS COUNTRY - West Park started cross country in 2007/2008 and had a very successful first season. Races are every month on Saturday mornings, at various locations in Bridgend. Training takes place during lunch hour on a Wednesday. Mrs Hancock organises the cross country in school.
SWIMMING - In
years 5 and 6 pupils attend swimming lessons at Pyle swimming pool
as part of the national
curriculum. Once a year the junior children
in the school have the opportunity to participate in an
inter-school gala.
DANCE - Children
get to 'get their groove on' at Dance club on Thursdays at 3.30pm -
5pm with Miss Griffiths.
CHOIR - The choir
is comprised of year 5 and 6 children – auditions are held when the
children reach year 5. Mrs Mainwaring arranges choir practice
during school time.
The choir perform at school events, such as the
Christmas concert and leaver’s concert. They also participate in
many community events such as: carol services, RNLI concert, visits
to old people’s homes, charity concerts and the musical
extravaganza at St. Davids Hall.
MUSIC
LESSONS - Junior pupils have the opportunity
to learn brass, woodwind and string instruments including violin,
cello, double bass and guitar.
Woodwind, Brass and Guitar lessons are provided
by CAVMS. There is a charge for each lesson.
Violin, cello and double bass lessons are
provided by the county and there is no charge to learn these
instruments.
Children who play instruments have the
opportunity to play in the school orchestra, string group and wind
band in the Christmas and Leaver’s concerts.
ECO CLUB - West
Park is registered with the Eco-Schools programme and has received
the 'Green Flag Award' as recognition of our efforts towards
environmental sustainability.
We
believe we should not just talk about environmental issues, but
should also do something about it!
Coolkidcomputers -
Coolkidcomputers is a club held weekly at 3.30pm - 4.30pm on
Thursdays. The club further extends the knowledge and practical
application of technology through a range of fun and interesting
activities for all those who attend. The club runs for a half-term,
with new themes each term.
Every Thursday a 'Coding Club' is offered to those enthusiastic programmers. It takes place every Thursday lunchtime in the ICT Room.
